Our lab recently published a paper titled "Experiment-free exoskeleton assistance via learning in simulation" in the journal Nature. This collaborative effort demonstrated a new method that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and computer simulations to train robotic exoskeletons to autonomously help users save energy while walking, running, and climbing stairs. This breakthrough may provide a generalizable and scalable strategy for rapid development and widespread adoption of a variety of assistive robots for both able-bodied and mobility-impaired individuals. NC State University has published a cover news introducing this work.

Our paper titled "Reprogrammable and reconfigurable mechanical computing metastructures with stable and high-density memory" has been published in the journal Science Advances!

 

This collaborative effort demonstrated akirigami-inspired mechanical computer that uses a complex structure of rigid, interconnected polymer cubes to store, retrieve and erase data without relying on electronic components. The system also includes a reversible feature that allows users to control when data editing is permitted and when data should be locked in place.

 

The paper was co-authored by Prof. Jie Yin of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University.

Dr. Sainan (Selena) Zhang, who was a Ph.D. student supervised by Prof. Hao Su, and now a postdoctoral research scholar working in the BIRO lab, proudly announces our paper titled "Actuator Optimization and Deep Learning-Based Control of Pediatric Knee Exoskeleton for Community-Based Mobility Assistance" has been officially published in the respected journal "Mechatronics" (Elsevier)! This collaborative effort explores cutting-edge advancements in optimizing actuators and applying deep learning techniques to control pediatric knee exoskeletons for community-based mobility assistance.

Dr. Wei Chen visited Dr. Hao Su’s Biomechatronics and Intelligent Robotics Lab. She is the Wilson-Cook Professor in Engineering Design and Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University. Dr. Su and his students showcased their work with multiple soft, surgical and humanoid robots.

PhD candidate Junxi Zhu received 2022 Best Paper in Mechatronics Award (paper link) that will be officially announced and presented at the Mechatronics TC meeting on Oct. 3 at the Modeling, Estimation and Control Conference at Lake Tahoe, NV. Dr. Su received a grant to conduct clinical testing of our lightweight knee exoskeleton with Dr. Peter Barrance at Kessler Foundation, a top 3 rehabilitation hospital research center in the US, to evaluate the biomechanics and pain relief of exoskeleton-assisted locomotion for people with musculoskeletal impairments.

Two of our works were awarded in the 2020 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM 2020): Quasi Direct Drive Actuation for a Lightweight Hip Exoskeleton with High Backdrivability and High Bandwidth was selected finalist in the Best Student Paper Award, and An Untethered Electro-Pneumatic Soft System for People with Foot Drop received the third prize of Student Design Competition.
