Democratic Socialism and Communism are not interchangeable, as many believe them to be.
Though Communism and Democratic Socialism have similar criticisms of Capitalism, structurally and philosophically they are very different. Democratic Socialism involves electing officials through popular vote, hence the name. Communism, on the other hand, often results in totalitarian leadership because the people do not have the power to make political decisions.
The economies in both systems also vary greatly. Under Communism, there is no privately-owned property. The goal of Marxist Communism is to create a classless society, which eliminated Capitalism. Everything is owned and regulated by the government. Both private and public property exist under Democratic Socialism. Capitalism exists in a Democratic Socialist society, but with more regulation.
Democratic Socialism around the World
Democratic Socialism is represented in several of the most fiscally, socially, and environmentally successful nations around the world. Scandinavian countries like Norway, Denmark, and Finland are the most referenced socialist countries, and often rank highly in categories such as happiness ratings, political participation, and income equality. Though Scandinavia is considered the most “socialist” part of the world, nearly every developed country exhibits some form of socialist policy.

“Though Scandinavia is considered the most socialist part of the world, nearly every developed country exhibits some form of Socialism”
Two policies that have been deemed inherently socialist—universal healthcare and free secondary education—actually exist in almost every developed country, with America notably left out. It is apparent that America’s fear of Socialism hurts the country when taking in account employment rates, wage disparities between male and female workers, educational performance, and several other rankings. Americans deserve the benefits that Socialism brings to other developed countries.
Socialism is not something to fear but something to embrace.
