Carolyn Stewart

President

Carolyn is President of Malama Kai Foundation and has provided foundational leadership and inspiration since its inception. She is also the Vice President and a principal consultant for Marine and Coastal Solutions International, Inc., a small consulting firm specializing in planning, management and policy analysis for marine and coastal resources.

Between 1991 and 1999, she worked as a planning and policy analyst for the Hawaiʻi Coastal Zone Management Program. She has worked on numerous coastal and marine resources management projects locally and abroad, for government agencies and international organizations. Much of Carolyn’s work has had an emphasis on polluted runoff control and watershed management. When not working, Carolyn enjoys gardening, playing tennis, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Terry O’Halloran

Executive Director
Terry became Executive Director of Malama Kai Foundation in April 2010, has served on the Malama Kai Foundation board of directors for 10 years, and has lived in Hawaiʻi for nearly 35 years. He has founded and/or managed various business and ocean conservation organizations over the years. He started a dive shop on Kaua`i (now the island’s oldest) and was VP of Business Development for both Atlantis Adventures and Hawaii Superferry. He helped found and was the first president of The Ocean Recreation Council of Hawaiʻi (TORCH), Ocean Tourism Coalition (OTC) and Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety Team (HOST).

Additionally, he has served on numerous boards and advisory councils in Hawaiʻi and nationally, including UH Sea Grant, Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and the Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee. Terry owns Tourism Business Solutions, LLC/Change Strategies and Innovation, an ocean resource management consultancy. When not working, he enjoys scuba diving, ocean kayaking, hiking and photography.

Elizabeth “Buffy” Pickett

Project Management


Elizabeth created and launched Ocean Warriors, a highly acclaimed and innovative after-school program that guides Kohala youth to learn about and steward the natural and coastal resources of Hawaiʻi. She has extensive experience in natural resource management, research, and community volunteer coordination/education and has a Masters of Environmental Science from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

She inspires local communities from the ground floor to executives and works well with all community sectors. For several years, Elizabeth has coordinated the MKF community-based coastal resource management efforts in North Kohala. When not working, Elizabeth enjoys kite-surfing, participating in triathlons, making art, and playing music with friends.
