Pipes are a means of transporting items and fluids from one place to another.
Note: The recipes and item forms of Pipes all appear to take up an entire block. When placed, they do not visually occupy an entire block, but they do have full block hitboxes. (This is in effect because of various bugs with movement and partial-block hitboxes.)

Pipes can have Covers attached to them, most notably Conveyor, Pump, and Shutter Modules, which are the main ways of inserting and extracting their contents. You can place, screwdrive and crowbar covers to all faces of the pipe using only one face, the same way you can rotate a machine with the wrench.

The 4.06d update allows Item Pipes to interact with Thermal Expansion's Item Ducts and Buildcraft's Pipes.

Gregtech fluid pipes can accept liquids from Buildcraft's fluid pipes, but need need a pump cover set to export (the cover's default mode) to insert liquids into them. Alternatively, wooden or emerald fluid pipes can drain liquids from Gregtech fluid pipes. Both methods mean that any connection between BC and GT fluid pipes can only be one-way, currently.

Fluid Pipes

Fluid Pipes are GregTech's pipe variant that transport liquids, such as water, or gasses, such as steam. They are capable of transporting any Fluid in the Forge Fluid registry.
There are 4 different material varieties of fluid pipes; Bronze, Steel, Stainless Steel and Tungstensteel. These pipes transport different amounts of fluid per second, with Bronze transporting the least, and Tungstensteel transporting the most. Of each of these material varieties, there are two different variants, regular, and large. When you craft the regular pipes, you get two from the recipe, but when you craft the large pipes, you only get one pipe, even though they both use the same resources in the recipe. However, this is made up for by the fact it transports double the amount of liquid per second.
Note: When Fluid Pipes output, they may not refill themselves evenly. A "sloshing" effect can occur, in which fluid can bounce between several partially filled pipes in a line. The general solution to this, if you are using large chains of Fluid Pipes, is to add Shutter Covers set to "Only Output Allowed" or "Only Input Allowed" as backflow valves every few blocks.
In version 4.07m, an additional set of Small Fluid Pipes were added, with 1/3rd the capacity of their standard versions. They are crafted with the Large Fluid Pipe recipe, upside-down, and craft in groups of 6.

Note: While a chain of Machine Boxes with Pump Modules allows for up to 1 Bucket/tick (1000L/tick) transport rates, slightly faster than even the fastest Pipe, Pipes are cheaper and easier to work with, will not explode in rain storms, do not require power, and look much more fitting than a line of flat grey boxes.
Note 2: The Small Bronze Fluid Pipe transports fluid at 40L (40mB) per tick, the same rate as a Buildcraft Gold Fluid Pipe. Any pipes larger than it are therefore better than anything Buildcraft has to offer.

Item Pipes

Item Pipes are the pipe variant that allows items to be transported from one inventory to another, and allows for simple machine automation.
There are 2 different material varieties of item pipes, which are Brass and Electrum.
These pipes transport a different number of stacks per second. Of each of these material varieties, there are two different variants, regular, and large. Regular and Large item pipes follow the same pattern that fluid pipes do, so that the large item pipes transfer double the amount of stacks per second that the regular pipes do.
Note: Version 4.05k nerfed the throughput of all Item Pipes by 50%, and added Platinum Item Pipes with 100% more throughput than the Electrum variants to keep the 8 Items/sec Bandwidth.
Note 2: When they were originally implemented, Pipes could only accept 1 stack/second per pipe block, so that in order to utilize a pipe's full capacity you would need to insert items at multiple places along its length. Version 4.05j changed this so that Item Pipes could accept Items at the full rate at which they could be transferred. Credit for this idea goes to Bakerman's LP series.
