GregTech adds several Tools used in mining and engineering.
Recipe Note: Refined Iron no longer exists as a material. All recipes that previously used
Refined Iron now use
Iron.
Tool Materials
Wrenches, Files, Saws, and
Hammers can be made out of
Iron, Bronze, Steel and
Tungstensteel. Higher materials have more durability. Additionally, GregTech adds Bronze, Steel, and Tungstensteel
Swords, Pickaxes, Shovels, Axes, and
Hoes. They also follow these durability patterns.
Wrenches and
Saws also have
Electric variants. The (basic)
Electric variants are made of Steel, are considered Tier 1 electric tools, store 16,000EU, and have 16 uses. The
Advanced variants are made of Tungstensteel, are considered Tier 2 electric tools, store 128,000EU, and have 128 uses. There is a slight bug with NEI that shows these electric tools as always having 1 fewer use than their stored energy would indicate.

Crowbars
Crowbars are crafted with 4 blue dyes and 3 iron rods. They are used to remove covers from machines, and can rotate minecart tracks without Railcraft installed. If Railcraft is installed, GregTech and Railcraft Crowbars can be used interchangeably.
Crafting
Any OreDictionary-registered blue dye will work, including Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite Dust, Blue Spray Cans, and Indigo Dye.
Wrenches
Wrenches are Omniwrenches that work for most mods and are used in a few recipes and do a fair bit of damage, especially on Golems. Additionally, wrenches are now used in the crafting of Machine Blocks and Machine Hulls, before an Assembling Machine can be constructed.
Crafting
Recipes Used in
[Any GT wrench can be used]
- Iron, Bronze, Steel, Titanium, Tungstensteel, Iridium, and Stainless Steel Gears
- Basic Machine Casing; Aluminum, Bronze, Brass, Steel, Titanium, Tungstensteel, and Stainless Machine Hulls
- Vanilla Hoppers and Iron Bars
In-world Use
GregTech overwrites the standard IC2 wrench API. Under Greg's system, to rotate a machine block, right-click with a wrench on any face of the block, in the direction you want the block to face. Note that this is not telling the block to rotate in that direction, it is telling the block specifically to face in that direction. Right-click on the center of the block to face it towards you, and right click on a corner of a face to face the block away from you. This allows you to, in one click, rotate a machine block any direction you wish.
In order to disassemble a machine, wrench it in the direction it is already facing.
This color-coded square shows the wrench-functional areas.
Yellow (4x8 pixel sides) = Face that side
Blue (8x8 pixel square center) = Face you
Red (4x4 pixel corners) = Face away from you
On GregTech machines that have an automatic output side, the output will be on the "back" of the machine. So if you wrench a machine to face up, its output side will face down. This is a common issue with the new Bronze-age Steam powered machines, all of which have a steam exhaust port on their back sides, which must remain clear for the machine to function.
Note: Tool usage and cover placement also applies to the new GregTech Pipes
Hammers
Hammers are also used for various crafting recipes, most notably the crafting of metal Plates before a
Plate Bending Machine can be constructed. (Craft two metal Ingots in a column, with the Hammer on top, and it will produce one metal Plate.) They also do a fair bit of damage, especially on Golems. Hammers can also be used to search for ore; right clicking a block triggers their prospecting ability, which scans random 11 blocks in the 5x5x5 vicinity of the block which was clicked on and returns if any ores are detected. Note that because it scans 11 random blocks in its vicinity, it may or may not actually detect what ores are present in the area, and as such you may need to whack more than one block to get an accurate reading. Whacking the same block more than once will return the same reading.
Additionally, Hammers can be crafted with Ore blocks to smash them into 1 Dust of whatever the Ore is.
Whenever a Hammer is used in a crafting recipe, the Anvil sound effect plays.
The
Rubber Hammer is slightly different, as it can rotate blocks and turn Redstone lamps on and off, as well as manually turn machines on and off. It is required to actually activate the new Multiblock Generators. Additionally, it comes pre-enchanted with Knockback II.
Crafting
Prior to 4.03a:
4.03a and up:
Files
Files are used in the crafting of early game tools or in converting metal ingots into metal rods, before a
Lathe can be constructed. They are also used in the crafting and repair of Turbine Blades and Rotors.
Saws
Saws are used to convert Logs into Planks, and Planks into Sticks. Crafting Logs into Planks or Planks into Sticks without a Saw results in half-yield. (4 in stead of 2.) If this behavior is disabled via config files, crafting with a Saw results in 1 additional plank or stick being made per craft (5 in stead of 4). Saws can also be used in the place of Axes, to break Wood blocks.
Screwdrivers
Screwdrivers are crafted with
2 Iron Rods and 1 Stick. Although they are made of Iron, they have Bronze-tier durability (256).
A Tungstensteel version also exists, crafted with 2 Tunstensteel Rods and 1 Steel Rod.
An Electric version also exists, crafted with 2 Stainless Steel Rods, 1 Electronic Circuit, and 1 RE -Battery. It is considered a Tier 1 electric tool, consumes 1000EU per use, and stores 16,000 EU.
Screwdrivers are used to adjust the functions of
Covers. Right-clicking a Cover with a Screwdriver will cycle through that Cover's available functions. Additionally, right-clicking an uncovered face of a machine will create a cover that blocks all interactions with that side of that machine. Right-clicking on that cover with a Screwdriver will convert it into a red cover, which allows interaction but blocks Redstone signals.
Screwdrivers are also used to adjust the output mode of Output Hatches. To define an item stack size for blocks with output sides, you can right click that side with a Screwdriver. This increments the output stack size with 1 each time. There is currently no way to decrement this number except incrementing all the way up to 63, then incrementing again to reset it to 0. This can be useful when automating e.g. Industrial Electrolyzers for use with multiple different items that have predefined input amount requirements, to prevent the machine from clogging up on one type.

Soldering Irons
Soldering Irons are made with 1 Electronic Circuit, 1 RE-Battery and 1 Iron Ingot. They require Soldering Tin or Lead to work and are used for repairing "Circuitry burned out" (in the
Maintenance Hatches of newer multiblock machines). Soldering Tin and Lead are made in the Automatic Wiremill. The Soldering Iron is considered a Tier 1 electric tool, stores 10,000EU, and consumes 1,000EU per use.
(Recipe still shows a Refined Iron Ingot)
Jackhammers
Jackhammers are mining tools that can only be used to break Stone, but do so extremely quickly. Their inability to mine anything other than stone makes them excellent tools for detecting GregTech concealed ores. Additionally, their speed makes it much easier to cope with the "Harder Stone" option. They come in three varieties,
Bronze, Steel, and
Diamond. The Diamond Jackhammer breaks Stone almost instantaneously.

Rock Cutter
The
Rock Cutter is an Industrial Silktouch III Diamond Pickaxe. It uses 500EU per block mined, but operates at speeds comparable to a Wooden Pickaxe. Its enchantment level reads "Silktouch III" because it was shinier than Silktouch I. It is considered a Tier 1 electric tool, and stores 10,000EU (20 blocks).

Mortar
The
Mortar and Pestle is an item that can manually grind up certain soft metals without use of a Macerator. To use it, shapelessly craft it with a metal or ingot. (It will not work with ore blocks.) The Flint version is crafted using a piece of Flint and a Wooden Bowl, and has one use. The Iron version is crafted with 5 (Any type of) Stone Bricks and 2 Iron Ingots, has 64 uses, and returns 1 Iron Dust when broken.
