Learn moreThe goal of Data Scholars is to build an inclusive community in the Data Science space. Data Scholars provides mentorship and space to underrepresented and nontraditional students(re-entry students, transfers, student parents, students of color) and guides their transition from Data 8 to more advanced Data Science courses.
“The whole goal of this course is to make data science as accessible as possible to students of many majors and backgrounds,” Macias said. “Data Scholars is an extension of that, and we want to be proactive about making sure there’s not a diversity problem in data science at Berkeley.”
Learn moreThe Diversity team works within the larger Data Science Education Initiative. This semester they've worked on the Data Science Scholars program. They've also conducted interviews with current Data 8 students to better understand student experience. They hope to incorporate student feedback in future efforts and implement industry visits, career counseling, and upper division course support.

Learn moreThis fall the Data Science Initiative and the D-Lab partnered with student organizers to initiate the Data Scholars program, a community providing a welcoming environment and support resources to underrepresented students taking Foundations of Data Science (Data 8), Berkeley’s lower-divion Data Science course.
Learn moreThis fall, more than 500 students are taking Foundations of Data Science, Berkeley's lower-division data science course for students of all majors. A survey was completed in September by nearly all of the enrolled students in the Fall course (504 out of 517), taught this fall by Professor Ani Adhikari of Statistics. Below is a snapshot of the students enrolled in the course this fall.
