Couldn't agree more with Jeff.

The point of being a bard isn't to be a tank or a damage dealer (though in
some situations we can do an adequate job of dealing dmg). Our *primary*
role is as a "Downtime Reducer". We reduce downtime with Regen, Magic
Reists, Mana regen, and our ability to haste, crowd control, charm, etc can
all also be looked at as ways of reducing downtime.

We aren't in a group to add to the dmg directly. We add in far more subtle
ways. :)

Sometimes you just have to grit yer teeth and sing only manasong or wind up
gettin everyone axed. Sometimes you nod to the guy who's better at things
and just try to enhance what he's doing and/or work on another area (snares,
dmg shields, you name it.) It isn't like we lack variety in our powers.
