From the Backup and Restore page, you can view, add, and maintain scheduled backups. Users require the 'Organize backups' access right to manage backups (the 'Organize backups' access right requires the 'Login to Management Console' access right, otherwise it cannot be selected). Backup and Restore should be set up such that users can view the backup schedules, but only administrators can schedule backups, perform actions on schedule (backup/cancel) or restore a backup.
When restoring a backup, users who do not have permissions to view the entire configuration could unknowingly overwrite changes made by other users to the parts of the configuration they cannot view. It is recommended only administrators be given the ability to manage backups.
If you have not configured backups for certain backup areas, you are presented with a warning: a warning icon in the navigation menu and a warning banner on the Backup and Restore page. You can dismiss the warning without configuring backups by clicking the Permanently dismiss warning link in the warning banner. In that case, you can only restore the warning by deleting the data store.
The backups are platform-dependent. Thus, a backup created on a Rhapsody engine running on a Windows® machine, for example, can only be restored on a Rhapsody engine running on a Windows® machine.

Full and Incremental Backups
The Backup and Restore page enables you to schedule full and incremental backups. Full backups will backup all files, while incremental backups only backup files that are new since the previous backup, plus any files that were active in the previous backup (that is, the files that have changed since the last backup).
It is a good idea to configure an infrequent full backup to the same directory as a frequent incremental; for example, a weekly full backup and a daily incremental backup. Each full backup provides a fresh starting point for further incrementals, rather than having a never-ending chain.
A new backup will never overwrite a previous backup. All backups (full and incremental) are created in a directory inside the directory you specify in the Backup field, with an appropriate name to indicate whether it was full or incremental and the time of the backup; for example, 20080211-1420_INCREMENTAL
.
Backup directories are not deleted by Rhapsody. It is up to you to determine how long backups should be retained and to delete them once they are no longer required.
Take care when deleting old backups; to restore a backup you must have a valid starting point (that is an initial full backup), and all subsequent incremental backups. You cannot restore a backup if there is no starting point or if an incremental is missing.
Backup Areas
Backup areas are categories of data that the user can specify to back up. Backups can be performed on the following areas:

Includes the backup and archive cleanup schedules and user accounts. In LDAP mode, the backup does not store the user accounts, instead it stores the settings for connecting to the LDAP server. |
Configuration | Includes the engine configuration. This includes all route, communication point, and filter configurations, along with any other configuration data (auxiliary files, definitions, watchlists and delivery agent global properties, message tracking schemes, security objects and variables). |
Message Store | Includes the logs as well as the message data. This message data includes both archived and live messages. Restoring a copy of the message store at any later date would mean reverting back to the exact state of the backed up message store, which means that any live messages in the message store may be sent again. Thus, it is often undesirable for users to back up the message store. When performing a message store backup, the backup task needs to pause running components for a short period of time in order to backup live messages. For an engine under high message load, the number of live messages can be large, which could result in decreased engine throughput and occasional pauses in message processing while the backup task is running. Therefore, if you must back up the message store, it is recommended that you schedule it during off-peak hours. Using a message store backed up on one engine to restore the message store on another also requires copying the original engine's configuration. The license file, log4j.properties
, and rhapsody.properties
files are not backed up by any of the backup areas, as these files contain engine-specific, environment-dependent properties. You must back up these files manually.
Backup Scenarios
There are typically two reasons for configuring backups: disaster recovery and setting up a duplicate environment.
Disaster Recovery
The primary purpose of restoring a backup is to get the Rhapsody engine up and running again after a catastrophic failure. The two backup areas that should be configured for this case are Administration
and Configuration
. Having these two backup areas configured is a recommended prerequisite for performing Rhapsody engine upgrades.
The Message Store backup is not necessary for disaster recovery, and in some cases could have detrimental consequences. This is because the Message Store backup represents the state of the messages in Rhapsody when the backup was completed, which could be out-of-date by hours, days or weeks when a failure occurs. Restoring an out-of-date Message Store would result in any live messages from the time of the backup becoming live again, and flowing into their respective systems which may not be expecting old (and now duplicated) messages. Therefore, for most cases it is recommended you do not perform a Message Store backup.
If it is critical for you to restore messages as part of a disaster recovery plan, the backup of message-related data should be handled via asynchronous SAN replication. Refer to Disaster Recovery for details.
Setting up a Duplicate Environment
Sometimes, an exact copy of a Rhapsody engine, including live messages, is required. This is most often the case when creating a realistic Staging environment using Production data. In this scenario, all three backup areas (Administration
, Configuration
and Message Store
) can be selected. This is typically the only use-case that requires a Message Store backup.
Development and Test environments often do not, and should not, contain production data, therefore a fully duplicated environment with Production messages is not required.
Backup State and Actions
Any scheduled backup displays its current state (running
or not running
) or when it last ran (if it is currently in not running
state but has been run at least once at some point in time). If a backup is not running, you can start a scheduled backup immediately by clicking the Backup Now link for the backup.
Only one backup can be run at a time. If a backup is running, you can cancel the backup by selecting the Cancel button.
Deleting Backups
You can configure Archive Cleanup to delete old backups automatically. Refer to Automatic Cleanup for details.
Upgrading
Ensure you back up your configuration before upgrading your engine. Refer to Upgrade Strategies for details.
Backups before upgrade are particularly important when you are upgrading from Rhapsody version 5 or earlier to version 6 or later as configuration migration is required. Refer to Configuration Migration for details.
