Duties of the Starter 1. Has control of competitors from the time the Referee turns the race over to him until a legal start has been accomplished, unless the Referee intervenes and assumes control. 2. Positions self at the side of the course where timers can see him/her and the flash of the pistol or signal light. 3. Holds pistol above head and motionless when giving the start signal. 4. Shall comply with rules regarding starts and false starts. 5. May be asked to fire a warning shot that signals gun lap. 6. Shall disqualify swimmer(s) for starting infractions. 7. May serve as a stroke or turn judge if requested by the Referee. 8. Shall give command: "TAKE YOUR MARKS" in a slow steady voice and in a non military fashion. 9. Shall fire the pistol when all competitors are motionless and complying with the starting rules. 10. Shall deal with false starts in the prescribed manner.
