The infrastructure behind ColorColab

REQUIREMENTS

Hardware

ColorColab will require three main pieces of hardware: an iPad, a Magneo “magnifying glass” augmented reality interface, and a steel stand.

The stand is a steel stand that has three shelves, and an charging iPad holder. The stand is to be placed 0.5 meters away from the statue — close enough to signal to visitors it is related to a specific artifact, but also far enough to let users stand between the stand and the sculpture to explore the artifact itself. The stand will not be screwed into the ground, as it will be made of steel and thus heavy enough to not be knocked over.

The iPad and the Magneo will be available in the stand next to the sculpture to be explored. While the Magneo simply lies on one of the shelfs of the stand, the iPad will be connected on its bottom to the charger on the stand. The iPad and the magnifying glass will not be physically ligated to the stand. Rather, they will have a security chip system that will be activated if the user takes them more than 3 meters away from the stand (and the user will be warned about this in the stand itself —“Don’t take me too far away from my home”). The iPad will not have a passcode, so the user can immediately access it.

Unlike other AR systems, which use head-mounted or head-up displays, the "magnifying glass" approach—a type of Handheld Augmented Reality—employs a palm-sized video see-through device to present computer augmented view of the real world. This configuration's advantages over traditional configurations include that the user doesn't have to put on any cumbersome headgear. Like a magnifying glass, the user can easily move the device around and compare real and augmented images.

Furthermore, the choice to utilize a separate interface for the AR (as opposed to using the iPad and its built in camera for the AR interface) comes from the goal of sparking curiosity in the users in an intuitive, almost child-like way for users of all ages. The shape of a magnifying glass is intuitive for almost any person, regardless of age or social background.

The Magneo device was specifically designed for children with its unique round-shaped screen, which enables children-focused exploratory learning. Its minimalist design enables learning and fosters curiosity in children and adults, as it makes exploration fun dn interactive and stimulates creativity. Magneo has achieved numerous Global awards, including the German iF 2015 Design Award, the Italian A’Design Award, the 2017 US CES Annual Innovation Award, and the 2017 TopDigital Awards.

Digital Data

The most basic needed data underlying the ColorColab will be a series of image-based 3d models of sculptures, with an additional layer of applicable texture that is customizable. These 3d models will, as the rest of the required digital data, live in the ColorColab web server, which is accessed by the Unity application.

A relational database framework will be employed to store the color palette and texture database. In its most basic form, a ground "color" database will be a lower layer with three columns: HEX color code, RGB color code and a pointer to an image square of the color. Each of the HEX codes may have additional textual notes, as for example if it is representative of an ancient pigment as supported by scholarly research. Additionally, the database will be enriched with user-inputted pictures and color tones, which will have additional textual notes.

This basic database of colors will be the basis of another database surrounding color palettes. This database will simply be a list of pointers to the color database. Each palette will also have textual a pointer to a textual database with descriptions and metadata of the palettes if they are pre-defined, and with user notes if they are user-uploaded.

Competences

A varied, multidisciplinary team will be required to make ColorColab a high-quality and successful project:

Archeologist/Art Historian. Expertise on ancient polychromy for ancient pigment color hue choice, as well as other important information for the communication strategy.

Computer Scientist. Development of the 3D models and textures, database creation and management, server-side programming and response creation. Development of Unity app, as well as Magneo-compatible app.

Technical Support Manager. Responsible for the physical installation and well being of hardware, including but not limited to lighting, physical integrity and security of the tech items, as well as the charging station and chip security system.

Producer. Museum relations, in charge of talking to stakeholders, solving hardware and installation problems, developing teams for video production, storyboard and copy editing.

Video Producer.  For introduction video, as well as communication press kits, etc. Documentation of the project as it unfolds with real visitors and school trips.

Graphic + UI/UX Designer. Responsible for the visual identity of ColorColab (in the online site, in social media, in the souvenirs). Development of the aesthetic and user experience in the online application as well as Magneo. In charge of creating and curating palettes. Help with press kit and catalogue development.

PR + Journalist + Content Creator + Fact Checker. Developing with communication strategy, writing copy for the press as well as dealing with the response to the project in the media.

Education Strategist. Responsible for the development of the educational toolkits, as well as coordination with schools and other educational organizations for the setting up of school trips and other activities.

Museum Liaison. Responsible for negotiations with the museum stakeholders, directors and staff. Negotiation in terms of installation, communication strategy, online presence, souvenirs, financial issues and more.
