Barry Romberg is, quite simply, one of the most exciting drummers on the local jazz scene. He plays with an energy and intensity that is hard to ignore regardless of whether he's playing in a traditional jazz quartet, in a tribute to the music of Bruce Cockburn, or in his own contemporary jazz ensembles. He always seems to be having a great time on the bandstand - fully interacting with the other musicians in the group, and being ever so devious...playing with the time feel just enough to keep everyone on their toes.
Over his 40-plus-year career (he must have started when he was 5!), Barry has earned, as a leader and a sideman, awards and nominations ranging from the National Jazz Awards to JUNOs; he has played on over 60 albums including 13 as a leader or co-leader; and has played with top international jazz artists. He continues to maintain a busy performing, recording and producing schedule while also teaching at Humber College and York University and running his Romhog record label.
But, as they say, less talk and more rock. Here's a clip featuring Barry in action...
I like how, in this clip, the three musicians playing (that's Robi Botos on keys and Rich Brown on bass along with Barry) all seem to be doing their own thing, but they are moving together - there's total freedom but at the same time they're playing together. Barry wanted to explore the freer side of jazz when he formed the first incarnation of Random Access (which featured two guitars, trumpet, saxophone, bass, drums and percussion). He says: "The vision here was essentially to play free music, or at least music without any structure. Over time more structure was introduced...overall it's more groove based than free."
Random Access Unplugged is a relatively new construction, but has kept in mind the original goals. Joining Barry on drums are stellar local musicians Kevin Turcotte (trumpet), Kirk MacDonald (saxophone), Geoff Young (guitar) and Neil Swainson (bass). When Barry sent me the lineup after the show was confirmed, I was floored - these really are some of the best musicians in Canada.
