Curriculum Development/Teaching
- FORD/UNCF Second-Chance Teachers Program - Through a $2.7 million grant from the
Ford Foundation, eight UNCF colleges and universities redress the declining population of
minority teachers in America's elementary and secondary schools by offering special
programs aimed at professionals who are considering teaching as a second career. Active
and separated uniformed and civilian military personnel are targeted specifically. (1993)
- FORD/UNCF Community Service Partnership Project (CSPP) - Through a $2.7 million
grant from the Ford Foundation, this service learning program promotes changes in the
curriculum at UNCF colleges to successfully mainstream and institutionalize community
service. Service experiences are integrated into the curriculum, providing opportunities
for students to reflect on their service. College/community partnerships are developed
that meet actual community needs as defined by the community. Ten member institutions are
participants in the project. (1993)
- UNCF/Pfizer Foundation "Art of Teaching Chemistry" Grant Program -
UNCF, in partnership with the Pfizer Foundation and Pfizer Inc., sponsors the "Art of
Teaching Chemistry" program. Through a $150,000 gift, this three-year program has
awarded competitive grants of $20,000 - $25,000 to selected UNCF member colleges and
universities. The program is designed to strengthen the teaching of chemistry at UNCF
member institutions, improve attitudes and morale of chemistry teachers and students, and
attract a more diverse group of students, in particular women and minorities, to the field
of chemistry. (1993)
- UNCF Academy of Finance - Funded by the Travelers Foundation, this program
establishes curricula and internships that expose undergraduate students to the financial
services industry. Clark Atlanta University is the site of the first UNCF Academy of
Finance. (1994)
