Research

The UNCF annual Statistical Report is the most comprehensive compilation of data and analysis of the nation's private historically black colleges and universities. The report provides information on trends in enrollment, degrees granted, finances, student aid and faculty at UNCF colleges.

The Research Department publishes periodic research reports on selected topics, including improving student retention and demographic profiles of UNCF students.

Several publications have been funded by research grants to the College Fund. They include:

  • Blacks in College - By Dr. Jacqueline Fleming (Jossey-Bass, 1984) The author presents the findings of a major study of black college students to determine whether they are better served by predominantly black or white colleges. The study reveals that black colleges are more supportive of the personal, social and cognitive development of black students than predominantly white colleges.
  • Improving College Management - By Thomas E. Tellefsen (Jossey-Bass, 1990) This publication for higher education administrators offers guidance in developing systems, policies and procedures to improve the functioning of all institutional operations.
  • A Black Elite - By Daniel Thompson (Greenwood Press, 1986) This book contains a comprehensive profile of graduates of UNCF institutions, including social and economic backgrounds, academic achievements and career patterns.
  • Access to College: The Impact of Federal Financial Aid Policies at Private Historically Black Colleges - By Alan H. Kirschner and Julianne Still Thrift (United Negro College Fund and the National Institute of Independent Colleges and Universities, 1987) Documenting the dramatic shift in federal aid from grants to loans, this report highlights the impact of this shift on students from the lowest-income families.
