Precollege Programs

Precollege programs offer students an early exposure to college level academic work and to particular fields and careers. All of these programs are designed to strengthen the participants' opportunities for success once enrolled in college.

  • The John Lennon Precollege Scholarship Program - Funded by a gift from the Spirit Foundation, this program provides financial support for minority youth to participate in summer arts programs on selected UNCF campuses. (1992)
  • UNCF College Awareness Program - This program provides after-school classes, tutoring and counseling for students from Harlem in New York City. Twenty-two graduates have received full-tuition scholarships to attend a UNCF college. Support is from UNCF, the Louis Calder Foundation, Katzenberger Foundation, Ilma F. Kern Foundation, Barclays Bank, Charles E. Culpeper Foundation, and the John A. Hartford Foundation, Inc. (1989)
  • UNCF/Hoffman-LaRoche School Linkage Program - Funded by a six-year, $300,000 gift from the Hoffman-LaRoche Foundation, this program supports public school linkage programs (grades K-12) in math and science at UNCF colleges and universities. (1994)
  • IBM Faculty Fellowship Program - Through a $150,000 grant from IBM Corporation, the IBM Fellowship increase the number of UNCF faculty with doctorates in business, economics, engineering, mathematics, physics and science technology. (1964)
  • Lilly Dissertation Completion Support Grant - Funded by the Lilly Endowment, this $125,000 grant provides support for six to nine months to enable faculty to complete their dissertations. (1988)
  • UNCF/Mellon Faculty Doctoral Program - Through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the UNCF Mellon Faculty Doctoral Program provides dissertation year grants in the humanities to faculty from UNCF colleges, Hampton University, and four-year member colleges of the American Indian College Fund.
